Motivation can be hard to find, especially when your to-do list contains more items than your grocery list. When you have big dreams you want to achieve, the process from start to finish can be overwhelming. Relax—developing a tactical plan along with the right mindset will allow you to accomplish your goals in no time. Even if it has been a while since you have felt proactive, it is never too late to start something great. What are you waiting for?? Here are some tips to help kick that laziness once and for all and accomplish your goals. 

Edit Your List

When you decide to start tackling your goals, you probably dust off that ol’ to-do list and fine-tune it. It’s common for items that you once thought were a priority, to no longer apply to your current situation. Don’t fret! Decide if these items are in any way essential and, if so, consider transferring them to a separate list. Edit your list so that your goals are realistic and focused on what you want to accomplish.

Research and Plan

As the saying goes, “Proper planning and practice prevents piss poor performance.” (Say that five times fast!) If you’re trying to reach a goal, research all the steps needed to accomplish it before you set out on your journey so you can have an accurate idea of what needs to be done. Additionally, planning allows you to map out the steps and benchmarks that will lead you to your final goal. By doing this, you can anticipate potential roadblocks and be prepared for issues that arise. 

Divide and Conquer

Researching and planning will help you break down a particular goal into more digestible pieces. But don’t stop there! Divide and conquer your goals so that you’re laser focused. It turns out that your brain can only focus on one thing at a time. Multitasking drains you of your energy, so if you rely on it to achieve your goals, you might find yourself tired of the process too early on.

Find Your Most Productive Time

Let’s say, for example, that you’re not a morning person. When your alarm goes off, the first thing you think of is a hot cup of coffee—and everyone knows not to talk to you until you have it. However, in the afternoon and evening, your brain is awake, and you’re in the zone.

Guess when you should be working toward your goal?

That’s right—the hours in which you’re naturally most productive. If you are a morning person, then get up and get going. Otherwise, find your best time of day to be productive and get to work. 

Prep for a Temporary Setback

Remember: not everything will go as planned. If your goal is to lose some weight, understand that you may fall off your diet plan before getting on the right track. No matter what your goals are, mentally prepare yourself for setbacks and then vow to power through them. This builds a better mindset for success. 

Chart Your Progress

While working toward a goal, you may find yourself frustrated, as if you aren’t getting anywhere. But just because you aren’t moving full speed ahead, doesn’t mean you aren’t making progress. If you need to construct some sub-goals to see the subtle progress you’re making in your quest to meet your ultimate goal, do it! Seeing how far you have come will motivate you to perform better down the line.  

Set Realistic Expectations 

One of the biggest deterrents to accomplishing your goals is trying to tackle too all at once. When the motivation bug hits us, we all want to go full speed ahead. But I urge you to stay at a healthy pace, without overloading yourself. If you find yourself falling behind, then space out your tasks and work at a rate that allows you to feel accomplished and not overwhelmed. 

Show Some Pride

Imagine your goal is to train for and run a half-marathon. You might hesitate to share your grandiose plans because you feel that you might fail or bail. If that’s your mindset, then you might as well have. 

Make a point to share what you’re working toward proudly. Nobody will think you’re crazy or boastful; instead, you’ll be lauded for your bravery and confidence. Sharing your vision with others also makes you more accountable to achieving it. Who couldn’t use a bit of accountability in the quest to better oneself?
